What Your Nails Are Trying to Tell You About Your Health
6.Detached Nails
The medical word for nail separation—that is, the detachment of one or more nails from the nail bed—is "onycholysis." Sometimes this is brought on by medication or strong chemicals, but in other circumstances it may indicate thyroid dysfunction. Usually starting at the tip of the nail, this disorder moves rear towards the cuticle. Because of air under the nail plate, the split region could seem opaque or white. Apart from thyroid condition and chemical exposure, additional possible causes include psoriasis, fungal infections, trauma, and some drugs, especially tetracycline antibiotics. Frequent manicures or extended water contact can also aggravate the disorder. Treatment relies on the underlying reason but usually consists in keeping the impacted nails dry and clean, avoiding activities that can aggravate the separation, and letting the nail grow out normally. Preventing recurrence in situations of systemic disorders like thyroid disease depends on treating the underlying illness.
